Drupal lifecycle: updated end of life - dates
The four versions of Drupal: important dates regarding the lifecycles of D7-10.
Recently, some updates regarding Drupal’s lifecycle have occurred. So, let’s quickly go through where we stand with Drupal versions 7 to 10 and what to expect next.
Drupal 8
The Drupal version 8 reached its end of life on November 2, 2021. After that date, community support, bug fixes, and security updates ended for D8.
If your web service still runs on Drupal 8: turn to a Drupal agency immediately for Drupal 9 update in order to ensure your web service remains secure, bug-free, and up-to-date.
Drupal 7
Drupal 7 end-of-life date will be re-evaluated annually due to its wide use across the web. The latest information is that D7 will be supported at least until November 1, 2023, so that the organizations relying on D7 will have enough time to plan, budget, and execute the update to D9 (or 10).
If your web service is run on Drupal 7: turn to a Drupal agency, and start taking the first steps towards the Drupal 9 update.
Drupal 9
The Drupal version 9 end-of-life date has not changed from the previous announcement: as the D9 is dependent on Symphony 4, its support will end simultaneously when Symphony 4 support ends, on November 10, 2023.
If your web service is run on Drupal 9: great! Remember to follow the Drupal 9 patch and minor releases (Drupal 9.x.x), and update the latest bug & security fixes. Updating to Drupal 10 will be smooth if your web service is up to date with D9 releases.
Drupal 10
The release date of Drupal 10 is dependent on when the D10 beta requirements are completed. As Drupal is an open-source platform developed by its community, the community’s activity dictates the schedule – the faster the beta requirements are completed, the faster the release can take place. Currently, there are two scenarios when the release could take place. In the first scenario, the 10.0.0-beta1 would be released on the week of May 16, 2022, meaning that the Drupal 10.0.0 release would happen on August 17, 2022. However, if the D10 beta requirements would not be completed by May, the release date for Drupal 10.0.0 will be on December 14, 2022.
